Yeah, that old canard that Ferdinand and Isabella's advisors argued against Columbus' voyage because they thought the world was flat is a REALLY persistent myth. (I blame Washington Irving.)

They argued against it on the excellent grounds that Columbus' geography was bunk.

And here I was going to blame St. Augustine and the early church... (Kidding, btw, I know that's also a major myth.)

SusannaG - Do you have any book recommendations on this topic (15th century flat v spherical discussion)?
It's been years since I read it, but I believe there's a discussion of Columbus and his geography, and his travails with F&I's advisors, in Zvi Dor-Ner's Columbus and the Age of Discovery.

There's also a good discussion of the development and persistence of this myth on this webpage: http://dhayton.haverford.edu/blog/2014/12/02/washington-irvings-columbus-and-the-flat-earth/ .

Tell me when you get to Io, my favorite!

I think it's coming up shortly. Should get there later tonight. :) What makes Io special to you?

I just always remember it because I found it both terribly sad and sort of hilarious at the same time. I also almost used that story in a critical piece I was writing about rape and silencing.

Yup. I read it and can see what you mean. I was more sad than amused, tho.

The image of her using her hoof to write her name: that in particular was both absurd and awful.

What got me was Juno's blaming Io for Jupiter's behaviour. That was pretty sick.

Oh yeah. You can't look for help from Mt Olympus.
This is one of my favourites. An awesome interpretation of the Greco-Roman Mythos. You should also look at Apollonius' Library of Greek Mythology as a comparison.

Good to know you enjoyed this one, too. I am having loads of fun with it.
