Hahaha, it's a Highsmith, you of all people ought to know what to expect by now! :D

(Love the meme.)

LoL. True, but this is a new level of cringeworthy even for Highsmith.
Uh-oh ...

What makes it quintessential Highsmith, tho, is that I can't predict how it is going to end ... this may turn again at any moment.

Hehe ;)
BrokenTune 9 months ago
... This is going to end messy, isn't it?

Oh, the suspense. I can hardly bear it.
Read faster! :D

LoL. I'm gonna have to.
Lillelara 9 months ago
Yes! ;D

There is not a single person I could relate to in this book. Highsmith is the queen of the insane.
BrokenTune 9 months ago
And I take it that this is not going to change in the second half of the book, right?

What is up with Effie and Annabelle? They are both awful in their own way. I mean Dave is insane, but those two are just encouraging him.

I´m not going to spoil anything, but I will say this: this book made me feel uncomfortable in every conceivable way.

As for the women: Effie feels like the female counterpart to Dave, doesn´t she? She is equaly as insane as he is. And Annabelle is in my opinion the worst kind of female: she thrives on the attention Dave is giving her and encourages him in his behaviour, while she on the other hand treats him like shit. Her lukewarm attempts at discouraging Dave in his calls and visits were laughable. I really couldn´t stand that woman.

Annabelle is horrible. I mean, they are all horrible AND so stupid, but Annabelle seems devious and self-serving to boot.

I can´t wait for you to finish this book :)

I should finish it in the next couple of days. I'm at the point where Dave, Wes, and Effie get plastered, and I and concerned by the following:

"The next hour or so was unclear to David, and he thought it strange that so little alcohol could affect him so much, though the effect seemed to be only in his vision."
Hmm.

Mmmh .... Honestly, I hope you are going to like it. I enjoyed this book very much (as much as you can enjoy a story like this), but it´s really, really, REALLY twisted.
BrokenTune 9 months ago
I am enjoying it. Highsmith's characters are horrible, but she is SO GOOD at writing them and making them squirm.
Lillelara 9 months ago
Yes, she is. I still have a whole stack of unread books by her sitting on my shelf and I can´t wait to read them :).
BrokenTune 9 months ago
I have a couple more on the kindle (The Blunderer and Deep Water) ... and my library seems to have a whole lot more. :D
Lillelara 9 months ago
I have neither read the The Blunderer or Deep Water, so I´m looking forward to them as well. And yeah for your well-stocked library :)

Sounds like my kind of book!

If you're looking for anguish, cringing, and total asshats for characters, this is for you. ;)
Lillelara 9 months ago
The perfect tagline for the book :D

Oh, dear.
