Another go? Sounds like you have had an unconvincing experience with another Deighton?

I gave The Ipcress File (the novel) 3 stars. I have not seen the film version yet...but I did enjoy the movies made of Funeral in Berlin, and even Billion Dollar Brain is fun to watch if a bit weird.

I've not seen the film (or read) of that one (Ipcress File) either, but if The Berlin Game continues at the level it reads at now, I might give the rest of the series a chance.

I have this trilogy -- Game, Set, Match? -- but haven't read it. I went through a stage in the 80s when I read a lot of spy thrillers, then got burnt out on them for some reason.

And you're not tempted to join the Summer of Spies read? :)

So, um, this is embarrassing, but my dad & I used to do that scene you quoted (I played Bernard - her played Werner, which was weird b/c Werner is sexing the ladies...) As I said above somewhere, this is my favorite spy series of all time. I read them first when I was young, and I've been chasing the high ever since.

That is pretty cool and such a fun way to be inspired by a book. :)
