Interesting -- how does this reference "Middlemarch"?

It doesn't really, but there is a scene when one of the main characters moves from Karachi to Montreal and is given Middlemarch as a present. The scene is more of a symbol of how "traditional" can have different meanings - one being Middlemarch being a traditional classic representing freedom while being given to a modern individual striving for freedom but bound by traditions. Kinda weird but it works.
Ah -- that makes sense. OK, thanks!
