The pull-out map in my Berlin guide was a super feature. I also find bar/food listings a waste of space in guide books and like neighbourhood walks. I remember them being great in the Lonely Planet NYC and Chicago guides, circa 2000.

They are really cool and feature some well-known sights and some lesser-known treasures.
That's the thing - you see stuff you most likely wouldn't otherwise.

Precisely. And, imo, all good sightseeing should include something new.
This is why I now have a policy of walking as much as possible when playing tourist in a city.

It's an excellent policy.
I have a prehistoric edition of the LP Paris -- glad to hear the new editions are holding up well.

To be fair, this one is about 5 years old now. I got it before my last trip. It still works well.
Toujours Paris! :) And, never change a winning ... approach.
