I agree with you on the historical mis-timing. As I wrote here -- http://lindahilton.booklikes.com/post/1594376/1st-bingo-square-better-even-than-i-remembered-but -- Bill and Nora Ashby would have been vacationing in Paris during the worst of the War, which makes no sense. Nor Brat's transatlantic travel at the same time. The idea that the book was drafted before the war and then sort of updated makes sense.
