IIRC it was extant in Darwin's lifetime but never came to his attention.

Yes! It's fascinating stuff that Darwin and later his cousin Galton weren't aware of Mendel and that Mendel's theories only re-appeared in discussion at about 1900.

That was one of the things I also found so striking. Considering it is now so broadly taught and one of the cornerstones of genetics

I think this is why I found it so surprising also. It's basically the first thing I remember learning about genetics in high school biology - Mendel and the peas.
