I hope the book club meeting is going to make it at least halfway worthwhile ...

I'm sure it will. I don't regret having read the book. At least now I can take it off the list. But really, this was Sunset Song set on the coast...and with an unlikeable boy as a main character. I liked the women characters in the book but could not warm to Finn or many of the men.
And at least it's a stand-alone and not the first book of a trilogy? (Though I actually did like "Cloud Howe" and "Grey Granite" better than "Sunset Song".)

Yeah,... it's a standalone. I still haven't recovered enough from Sunset Song to go near Cloud Howe. I'm sure I will, tho. At some point.
That's pretty much the rationale that made me pack the omnibus volume containing the whole trilogy -- and nothing but -- as vacation reading, some years ago ... I figured if anything was going to make me get through it, it would be the absence of quick and easy alternatives! :)

That's a very sound rationale. :) I tried to set the book aside last night, but then the nagging feeling of wanting to get it off my shelf started to interfere with my third Tietjens books, and I couldn't have that.
Brownie points for Messrs. Ford and Tietjens for providing the necessary extra motivation to push you over the finishing line!
