Patricia Wentworth doing an hommage to ACD? Now that's an idea ...

Is that something that she's done in other books?

The man goes by the name The Great Prospero, btw. :)
Heh. :D Not hommages, exactly. But in her final 10 or so books (and this, "Ladies' Bane", is the "final ten but one" -- there are 32 Miss Silver mysteries in total), she often included elements of other types of suspense fiction, which might end up coming across like a sort of hommage. E.g., "The Catherine Wheel" is quite obviously her take on Du Maurier's "Jamaica Inn", and there are other books, too, that feature treasure hunts -- or inverse mysteries etc. So it would kind of fit for her to sneak in a clandestine bow to ACD and Prof. Bell here.

Ooh, that's kinda cool. :)
To the extent it works, it is. Unfortunately it doesn't always work -- at least not for me.

And easily recognised for humming Scottish folk tunes...
