How scary is this? Because the fam and I are taking a long roadtrip, and I know that you recommend this audiobook reeeally highly. We like to listen to audiobooks.

Char is in a much better position to answer this. I'm only a couple of chapters in and have been creeped out twice - once when the men get to the hotel, and once when Brey goes back to look for the suitacases - but it is more in a Haunting on Hill House psychological kind of way. McDowell definitely was a master in creating those scenes where your expectation of the horrible is the best horror that can be had.

There are, I believe, about 3-4 scary scenes, and one of those is a little gory. This is more of a southern family/generational epic with a few horrific aspects. Most of the horror is psychological, as BT said. I really think you and your family would enjoy it, M.R. It is my favorite audio of ALL TIME.

This is so haaard (cue whiny voice). I want to read it because I totally trust your book judgment, Char, but I'm afraid of horror because I'm pathetic. lol!

I totally get it.
He was on the screenwriting team for Beetlejuice and The Nightmare Before Christmas. I mean Beetlejuice was scary at times, but I wouldn't call it horror. This really isn't horror either, other than a few scenes.
