Who painted the cover pic?

The cover is a detail from The Fall of the Damned by Dirck Bouts the Elder (c. 1450) - Musee des Beaux Arts, Lille.
Just looked it up; the full pic's a good 'un!

It is! It is very intense. :)

Thanks. I hope so, too. Melmoth is still on my tbr and I will eventually get to it, not only because of the connection with Oscar Wilde. However, The Monk has two aspects to it that make it a preferable pick right now: 1. It is shorter than Melmoth, iirc; and 2. I have an idea about the plot of Melmoth but no idea whatsoever about The Monk, which makes this far more appealing right now. ;)
I read this one last year! I read through some reviews and some made it seem really wild, so I was a little disappointed/let down/deflated balloonish about it. I thought the second half delivered the Gothic crazysauce and there was one scene that was creepy for me. Can't wait to read your thoughts on it!

I have deliberately not read anything about it. Well, not anytime recently... but I do remember people enjoying it. I like my Gothic classics to be a real journey of discovery. :)
