I described it to the boy and told him to picture the initials in his head. I got such an eyeroll. LOL

USUK - hahahahahaha
If the rest of the book doesn't live up to those initials, my recommendation is to switch to Terry Pratchett's "Guards! Guards!". Not only because it's got dragons in it (I read it for the Cryptozoologist square), but because at some point beyond the 50% mark, you'd be swearing Pratchett wrote it this year or last, not 30 years ago (exactly) if you didn't know better. It's scarily prescient, with Pratchett's own spin on exactly what we're seeing in the UK (and the U.S.) at the moment ... and the writing is some of Pratchett's very best; laugh out loud funny in parts, but often your laughter also gets stuck right in your throat. I was completely blown away by it.

Excellent! I'll keep this in mind. I have only read the first few pages of Rule Britannia last night and I think I will like it, even tho some of the reviews I've read were disappointed with the book.
Since this is set in an alternate reality, I guess I'm expecting something akin a to a mix between The Birds and The Parasites. Not that I enjoyed the Parasites (I really didn't) but I expect that a familial setting would work better if there is a prospect of doom around gives some purpose to character development.
Fingers crossed, then ...
