I also can't see how the beer would have been popular given that P. was well-known for his other work. Who'd buy beer from a guy who also sidelines in experiments with yeast and germs such as anthrax? You just wouldn't know where that petri dish had been.
Isn't that a very 21st century consideration? We'e talking about a time when even surgeons found it perfectly OK to operate with their bare hands (washed or not) ...

It is. I was joking. The lack of knowledge at Pasteur's time about the connection between germ contamination and public health being at the heart of the matter.

Thank you, and yes, seriously. Usually, in recent years, it's been a matter of a day or so. This one is as bad as I used to have them years ago.
