I started this last night -- somehow I get the feeling that there is an extremely straightforward solution at the heart of the whole thing and we're being led a merry dance far away from said solution so as to make this a book-length tale and not merely a short story. But it's extremely early days for me, so I'm obviously trying not to judge too early.

Total aside, though mystery related: has anyone see Knives Out? A couple of friends and I went to see it just before Christmas and I thought it was excellent fun - and Daniel Craig did not embarrass himself with his Kentucky accent.

Not yet. A friend went to see it and said I should wait until it's out on Netflix.
That's good to know -- I had been wondering as well.

It is an odd book so far. It probably is pretty straightforward, but it seems to have been written as a comedy of errors. And what's with all the clues/red herrings about the pigs? And why is Mrs B calling everyone "child"?
Umm, because we're just a few books into the series and Mitchell was still experimenting with mannerisms? No idea, really (shrugs).

I'm pretty sure the pigs are red herrings (red pigs?) -- if they're relevant at all it's as to who had an opportunity to be at the scene of the crime-to-be. Which, taken all in all and disregarding all the hoopla of things going on "back at the ranch(es)", still comes down to an impressively small selection of people, looking at it from the POV of about a third into the book ...

I don't remember such annoying mannerisms from book # 1, but then I thought the first book was splendid and it kept me entertained until the end...much unlike this one. How are you getting on with this one?
So-so, but chiefly because I don't have a lot of time to read at the moment ...
