I'm interested to see what you make of this - I've only read one Western, Riders of the Purple Sage, which is considered a classic of the genre. It was quite good but at times the prose was as purple as any sage has ever been.

This is another book on my TBR, and it is purely because it is a favourite of a friend of mine, who likes the author so much that she named her son after him. Anyway, I really should read it someday, but I think I am put off by both labels: "western" and "classic".
Well, Riders of the Purple Sage is not long, nor was it heavy going in my experience, nor did it resemble a prose version of a Clint Eastwood Western.

Good. I'm glad to hear it.
It occurs to me that I've actually read Lonesome Dove, making it TWO Westerns I've read.
