Yeah, I don´t get the comic references when it comes to this book. I don´t think that this book is supposed to be comedic. And when I first read it I didn´t go into it with the expectation of being particularly funny of comedic.

Maybe they find Maddie´s deadpan deliveries and the way she talks to the grown ups funny. I find it amusing and I like her because of that. She is such an unusual character.

Anyway, I hope this will pick up for you, BT. It´s a bit slow in the beginning, but they should soon be on their way, so I hope you will get more invested in the story by then.

I'm a little further on now and I really like the interaction between Mattie and Rooster, but the "he said, I said, he said" is really getting on my nerves.

I get that :). Actually, I didn´t remember that the actual narrator is old Mattie, recounting her adventures when she was 14 years old. And the narration feels like she tells us her story orally. It might be that this book might work better on audio, tbh.

I've got the audiobook running while reading along.
