Based on a True Story is being advertised as a thriller in the veins of Ruth Ware and Gillian Flynn etc. but that is really a misrepresentation.
It isn't so much of a thriller as a clever book about fiction, reality, and the process an author goes through writing a second novel. There's plenty of navel-gazing on the part of the author and it was quite entertaining. Unfortunately, the ending dragged down my rating of it. The ending was daft. There was a point when it should have ended, instead it rambled on. Then it just stopped really abruptly.
Also, it was quite weird. This story is a slow burn. While usually stories start out great and then drag in the middle, this one dragged for 75%, then flipped into gripping action, the had a disappointing ending. An interesting read tho if you're not reading it for the "thriller" part.
Sigh. Thanks -- I'm going to have to think about this one then. Can't say I expect it to shoot anywhere near the top of my TBR anytime soon, though ...
