One of the sentiments whose appreciation may have changed since the book was written. And certainly one of the "celebrations" of the whaling industry that I found grating.

Lots of classics haven't aged well, which is to be expected. I almost wish I had read this in high school so I could compare teen-me's perceptions with adult me's. I'm sure I would have cringed my way through it as a teenager, but would I have cringed at the same things that are making me cringe now? I doubt it.

No, not at the same things. One of the great things about re-reading or trying books that previously didn't work at a later date. Also, one of the perils of re-reading, I guess, a favourite may have lost its appeal over the years.
