Pity -- sounds like a missed opportunity ...

Big time. I kept reading wanting it to get better. It's not bad so long as you just read it for light entertainment, but it could have been so much more. The characters aren't particularly likeable either, so if you need to like your characters, especially the main character, then you might have more problems with this book.

PS: I had a look at some of the reviews. A lot of people loved the book and kept mentioning Victorian style. I don't do "Victorian" so it might have been me, not the book so much?
I love *genuine* Victorian, i.e. actually published in the 19th century -- most of it, anyway -- but almost all fake Victorian is a complete wash out with me. There are very few writers nowadays who can do mock-Victorian convincingly -- usually, something is terminally off, and frequently even within the first couple of pages ... and it just keeps going downhill from there.

It was entertaining, but I've read better books that deal with the overlap between faerie/mythology and the "modern" world - that have more substance.
