Most decent science books have 30 - 100 pages worth of references or notes at the end. It helps when you want to know more about a subject.

I guess I've mostly been reading older things, where the authors reference other books and review articles rather than having read the primary literature themselves. So I guess I was surprised not that the references were there, but at how many of them and how deep into the primary literature he went
