I loved this book! But to be fair, it was one of the first few YA I picked up when I first started reading YA obsessively. Nowadays, I don't know if I'd have the same reaction, but, to be honest, I loved the world that Schwab created in this book. And the elements about the Histories was pretty imaginative and I loved it.

In contrast, I DID find myself loving Wesley because he's so different than a lot of the other YA male characters I'd read during that time. And I DO still love him a lot. I liked Mackenzie just fine, but just as an agreeable main character. But I do agree that the characters felt a little underdeveloped.

lol I realized that I used the word 'love' a lot in my comment, but this IS one of my more favorite YA books. :P

I'm glad you loved it :) ! Yes, Wes is really different than what we are used to in YA and that's refreshing! I would have liked a bit more of character developpments but the world she created was really unique! Have you read the second one?

Yeah. I was so excited about this book that when the second one came out I read it immediately! It was just as captivating: you get to see more of the world Schwab created, and you get to see more of Wesley and some of his background. Mac's development is still kind of flat, so I found it not as satisfying as the first book, though. But I don't want to ruin your experience, so I'll leave it at that.

Hope you enjoy it as well. There's a third book announced, but it seems that there's no definite publication date yet. I've been in anticipation mode ever since. Victoria Schwab definitely has a way with her words, because I find I really like her writing style.
