I haven't read the first book yet, but have been meaning to when off the library waitlist. The two stories you describe in this one seem awfully familiar, like have been done before.
Ann Leckie's Ancillary series deals with a ship AI in a human form too. Maybe that's why it seems familiar to you. The other story - I haven't read anything similar, but that doesn't mean it is not there.
LOL, I can easily think of dozens of examples of both. Most recently and probably most buzz-ed about Meg's story/character in Anne Bishop's "Others" series strikes a similarity to what you wrote of Jane.
Having not yet read the books, I clearly am in no position to judge. Plus, depending on how it's handled by the author it could equally be "oh I just love this and can never get enough of books that have" as "oh no, not another author doing this."
