What?
Scarlet's Web 3 years ago
I didn't review it, I didn't rate, I didn't say anything at all about it. But that's why I am banned.
Grimlock ♥ Inhumans 3 years ago
I'd laugh at how obvious it's become that they belong to the awethors now, but it's not really funny.
Grimlock ♥ Inhumans 3 years ago
Oh, and my liking of this post was to show support to you, not to support GR.
Scarlet's Web 3 years ago
It's ridiculous. I have asked them to explain to me how it's breaking the guidelines but I won't hold my breath.
Scarlet's Web 3 years ago
That's ok like away, I knew what you meant :)
Grimlock ♥ Inhumans 3 years ago
We do have BL, but GR is pretty hellbent on using the ban-hammer, or so it seems.
I am so sorry and so upset! I thought a shelf name like that was ok with GR! What the heck is wrong with them?
Scarlet's Web 3 years ago
Thanks Auntie. I only hope it doesn't mean everyone else is in for the same. The majority have similar shelves.
I'm also confused for similar reasons as AuntieJ. GR has said shelves like "nope" or "not for me" were fine. I myself have a "no thanks" shelf.
Spare Ammo 3 years ago
Crap
Scarlet's Web 3 years ago
It's the shelving from earlier, the one for promise of shadows.
Spare Ammo 3 years ago
Where did you shelve it?
Scarlet's Web 3 years ago
I shelved it on a nope shelf
Goodreads has just reached a new low.
I have a shelf called "Hell To The No Begone". According to GR's logic I guess I am about to be banned as well!
Scarlet's Web 3 years ago
They really have. It's not like the shelf was rudely named, I just don't understand it.
Exactly. GR says we're allowed to express disinterest as long as it's about the book and not the author. Sounds to me like *someone* flagged it and the GR person looking at it got over zealous. I am SO sorry! I hope they not only give you an explanation, but reinstate you. I swear, even when you TRY to meet their crazy TOS you get bit. It's really unreasonable when someone does TRY to stay within the rules.
Scarlet's Web 3 years ago
I replied to them saying I was confused as to how I broke the guidelines but well it's GR, I won't hold my breath for a reply especially after how they treated Linda.
Linda Hilton 3 years ago
Well, at least with me they targeted someone who was admittedly an honest and sometimes brutal reviewer. Their banning me came as no surprise, even though I hadn't violated TOS. Now, though, they're just insane. They've proven all they want are commercials, not reviews.
Linda Hilton 3 years ago
Holy Harold in '53 Bel-air! Well, at least you're in good company, and more of the truth about GR is coming to light.
Scarlet's Web 3 years ago
If they are going to start banning people for shelving books they don't want to read, a lot of users are going to be banned.
Rabbit Reads 3 years ago
That is such bull shit. I'm starting to feel paranoid now. *Goes to copy her do not want shelf so she can list it on other safe places, and delete her shelf*
Scarlet's Web 3 years ago
That's probably a good idea, just to be safe. I could understand the ban if I was rude or being nasty to users/authors but that's something I have never ever done.
Rabbit Reads 3 years ago
It's frustrating. What is so wrong about listing the authors/books you have no interest in reading? My mind is just boggled right now. I follow you here, so I will look forward to reading your reviews.
Scarlet,is there a way we can help you?
Scarlet's Web 3 years ago
I don't think so. GR is very strict with their ban policy. Once you're banned that's it, no going back. Thank you for offering though, it's appreciated :)
There's no problem. I wish I could do more. Hope you can fix this,I'm not sure if I can enjoy a site that bans people without even contacting them first.
Scarlet's Web 3 years ago
To be honest I think they only contacted me because few friends started contacting them to say my account was glitched. It was going on for more than 2 hours before I got an email.
Spare Ammo 3 years ago
They've gotten very- lax, I guess you could say, about notifying you when they are sneaking around messing with your reviews.
I think we should organize a full boycott on Gr's: we could start with a week.
No reviews, no updates, nothing.
I've pretty much stopped reviewing. I do rate, and friends there are always free to ask me for more info on why I liked it or didn't like it etc. But I don't like providing them with content when they act this way, and I've really never been comfortable not being able to choose to have my reviews Friends Only anyway (why I don't review on BL).
nospin 3 years ago
Just when I was thinking GoodReads is safe, they pull this. They said shelves named nope and not for me were okay.
I rate, but my reviews are shells (a line or two, and a link to a review here.

They have said that shelves indicating no desire to read were OK, and not just once, but repeatedly.
Scarlet's Web 3 years ago
At least they were kind enough to attach a backup of my shelves and reviews. I'm really more concerned about losing touch with all the great friends I made there :(
Rabbit Reads 3 years ago
I'm glad you were able to keep your shelves/reviews. It would suck to have to start from scratch.
Scarlet's Web 3 years ago
It really would, fortunately I have them on here and on Leafmarks and I had backed them up on the 26th of January to a cvs file.
A boycott seems okay to me. I'm going to miss your updates,Scarlet. Maybe if we let them know how upset we are...
Scarlet's Web 3 years ago
It's worth a try, they can only say no, right? I feel like someones chopped off one of my limbs, all my friends on GR were such a huge part of my daily life.
Spare Ammo 3 years ago
My post disappeared. I don't do much on GR as they are waiting to ban me but I would gladly participate in a boycott.
Soze Says 3 years ago
That's unbelievable, Scarlet! I've never read an abusive review from you. And to do it without explaining why ... Wow. WTF ...?
Scarlet's Web 3 years ago
That's what makes it such a shock. I would have no problem accepting a ban if I deserved it but I have never been abusive or nasty towards anyone.

I posted an update informing that I won't post anything on the site for the next days. I might send GR an e-mail too.
Scarlet's Web 3 years ago
Thank you everyone, you have no idea what your kinds words mean to me. I know it's daft to be upset over a ban from an online book site, I'm literally sat blubbering like a young child here at being cut off from so many wonderful friends.
Grimlock ♥ Inhumans 3 years ago
That makes sense to me - if you're active, if you have friend, if it wasn't fair. I saw the direction GR was headed in and laughed when they banned me; I'm fine here on BL.

But I understand if you're active, if you're emotionally invested, in a site to cry over it. Now, if BL banned me? I'd cry.
It's not daft! I would be very upset too! Particularly when you didn't actually do anything to violate TOS.
Not daft at all! You have every right to be upset.

Hey Scarlet, we don't really know each other but I'm friends with one of your friends from over on GR and I say her post about what happened to you there, so I just wanted to pop in and say hi and that sucks and is more than a little inappropriate for them to do. Hopefully we'll get to know each other here on BookLikes a environment that I have found to be far more user friendly, welcome.
Scarlet's Web 3 years ago
Thank you. Looking forwards to getting to know you!
Hey Karen! (Lady Inquisitor here) glad you're here showing support as well :)
...Bookfanatic 3 years ago
To be sure. If they're so anxious to have us tell them what we like then they damned well need to be prepared to hear about what we don't this road goes both ways or it's heading in the wrong direction for me ;-) Good to see you here as well my Time Travelling friend.
Shit. I'm so sorry, Scarlet. :(

Just out of curiosity, did they tell you that the shelving was why you were banned?
Scarlet's Web 3 years ago
They sent me this...

Your review of Promise of Shadows was recently brought to our attention, as it violated our review guidelines. As you continued to engage in activity of this nature despite multiple warnings, we have removed your account from the site. We have attached a CSV of your books for your personal records. You are now banned from using Goodreads going forward.

As I continue? I was warned once for using a picture of a puppet in a review, that's hardly continuing to engage in any behaviour.
Grimlock ♥ Inhumans 3 years ago
I've got to wonder if an author got their fans to flag you so much that you were banned.

It's just a thought, but, ugh.

I feel much safer here, for that reason. I don't have to wonder if I have to pander to the authors. BL's crew has made it clear that we're free to pan books that we don't enjoy, to talk about if we don't want to read certain books and why. Yes, even if it's because of author behavior.

I'm so, so sorry - much more so after reading this bullshit reasoning.
Wow. You got one previous warning and all you did was put it on a shelf? What in the actual fuck?

I was thinking that maybe it was a delayed reaction type of thing due to previous flags or whatever that they were just getting to b/c that's happened to a few people. Obviously that's not the case.

This is really, really messed up. I know I said it already but I am really sorry. This is so unfair and you'll definitely be missed. {{hugs}}
That is what I suspect TinaNicole. SOMEONE flagged it, that's for sure.
Scarlet's Web 3 years ago
If they flagged my shelving then they must have flagged everyones. I hate to think of what's to possibly still come :/
Tried to edit that - I see it was Grimlock that made the comment I was referring to, but BL isn't letting me edit :(
Grimlock ♥ Inhumans 3 years ago
I know. I'm honestly slightly amused at what could happen if they try to ban everyone who gets flagging drive-by's, but I'm so into BL - and haven't been into GR for a while now - so I have zero emotional attachment to GR. Zero.
Grimlock ♥ Inhumans 3 years ago
No worries, Auntie J. I've been having trouble editing, too, so I think it's a glitch right now. Nice to know I'm not the only one. Also, I didn't even notice that you'd attributed my post to someone else. And then I laughed, because I guess I'm just not insecure enough that I need to be credited.
Debbie's Spurts 3 years ago
Oh good grief! goodreads has gotten so ridiculous. I hope you do get reinstated (wow! no review, just a "nope" shelving being abusive? *gag*). Maybe if you do get reinstated you should delete all shelvings/reviews and stay on just as long as friends (message to see what other sites they use) do with some participation in groups until thise can migrate.

I would even import that data file to a bunch of book sites (even if you first remove the reviews and have no intention of being very active on the site) to beef up their book database to compete with goodreads.

I cannot wait for booklikes and other sites to beef up their group features.
Scarlet's Web 3 years ago

Yes, that's what I've been doing too, Scarlet -- working on the LM database. It's kind of slow going, but it's getting there.

Scarlet's Web 3 years ago
Thanks Rachel, I can only hope they will reply to me and maybe get it sorted but it's GR :/
I'm really hoping someone just went overboard by mistake and they'll fix it. A "nope" shelf is definitely not against GR TOS. And LOTS of us have one, some even more pointed than a simple "nope". We'll see if anything is done to the others who have negatively shelved this book (I sure hope not!)
Me too, AuntieJ.

I'm also confused for similar reasons as AuntieJ. GR has said shelves like "nope" or "not for me" were fine. I myself have a "no thanks" shelf. I also think banning you without warning is f****d up. Thank goodness you have what amounts to a backup here at BL.
Scarlet's Web 3 years ago
I only shelved it this afternoon and I am always very careful with what I do and say on there. Everyone that knows me knows I would never do anything to justify a ban. I just can't understand their logic at all, I'm honestly really shocked at it happening.
I have never, ever seen you do anything that violated their terms. Never. On top of that, you were quite a prolific reviewer there. I'm totally flabbergasted by this whole thing.
...Bookfanatic 3 years ago
Pssst, Scarlet. I think I know your problem. You're assuming there's logic involved, probably not a good assumption to make with things like this, just sayin' ;-)
Is there something going on with this book/author? Or did you just shelve it b/c you weren't interested for whatever reasons?
Scarlet's Web 3 years ago
There is a review posted, a one star, where the reviewer was attacked by socks because she pointed out how the book seemed plagiarised.
Scarlet's Web 3 years ago
Basically I shelved it to avoid making a mistake and reviewing it and then being trolled by them too.
On GRS? There's only three one-star reviews that I can see and two have no comments and the other only has two by the reviewer and a friend.

Did you mean Cursed by Fire? The one that ripped off Ilona Andrews?

There's a review like you mention for that one. I shelved it too and posted on the review.

Scarlet's Web 3 years ago
Sorry I missed this question.

No sorry I was getting mixed up and thought it was that book. It's another one that I shelved. My brain isn't working right tonight with all that's happened. It was actually a book called promise of shadows that I had shelved a few days ago. I placed it on my nope shelf and left the review blank and I put a note in private notes to remind me why I was avoiding it. There wasn't even a gif or one word typed into the review space. I am always so careful with my nope shelf to make sure there is nothing again the guidelines happening there.
That is so bizarre. It's like the BINGO author. They were all over that, deleting shelvings and non-reviews like crazy. But then others they just let stand, even when there are full blown reviews that break TOS.

So screwed up. And so wrong to do to someone for absolutely no reason. :(

ETA: I tried to edit my comment and for some reason it reposted it at the bottom. Then I tried to delete both and they're not going anywhere. Sorry for any confusion. :-/
Scarlet's Web 3 years ago
I can't say it enough, you guys are a blessing to have as friends. You've helped make a bad situation bearable
Ah. You know what I think may have happened then? I think it may not have been your shelf name but your Private Notes that did it. And YES I know how incredibly unfair and unreasonable that is. But I had that happen to me once before too. Had a book on my "No Thank You" shelf. Wrote a "review" talking about the book only, and in a funny way, not mean or terribly derogatory. But in the Private Notes I mentioned something regarding author behavior. My review was deleted as a TOS violation. This was a book that had MANY negative reviews that were deleted as TOS violations and so I presume many flags were going out. I firmly believe GR made the determination of my MOTIVATION from my Private Notes even though my review itself didn't actually violate TOS.
Degrees of Affection 3 years ago
That completely negates them being private then. That's more disturbing, IMO, then deleting books because of shelf names.
By the way, here is a post from GR on their policy regarding reviews and shelves. Nowhere does it state that you can't have a "nope" shelf, which is a pretty benign shelf title: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1517130-faqs-about-reviews-shelves-on-goodreads
deborahmarkus7 3 years ago
Thank you, Rachel. How the heck can they say that a shelf called "not for me" is okay, but "nope" gets you banned? I'm completely freaked out. Scarlet, everybody's going nuts on GR without you. We're all skeeved out and sad.
Scarlet's Web 3 years ago
I don't understand. The other shelvings of that book have been there for two days. I shelve it this afternoon, exactly the same as everyone else, and hours later I am banned :/
I'm freaking mystified. I honestly don't get it. I just @ tweeted those a-holes. I think if everyone starts tweeting their acct for answers they'll be forced to acknowledge this.
If we start a thread in Feedback they are just going to close it.
Scarlet's Web 3 years ago
My account has been so glitchy the past 24 hours, I figured that was what was causing the problem at first.I even posted an update about it. I'm wondering if somehow it made some of my reviews glitch and the private notes showed or something? I don't know if that's possible but I honestly can't understand how it can purely be shelving when it was only me.
Scarlet's Web 3 years ago
I'm probably clutching at straws but I can't understand it purely over shelving.
I truly think *someone* (like the author) flagged negative shelving, and when GR looked at yours they saw what you had in Private Notes and counted that as a TOS violation. I, like you, presumed we could freely speak our mind in Private Notes, as they are PRIVATE, but now believe GR will use what is said there against us if a review is flagged for review.
Linda Hilton 3 years ago
I believe that issue was brought up in the huge mega Feedback thread the followed the Sept 2013 purge. I may have some notes in my archives on it. If they've violated their own assurances to members, then they deserve anything they get in return.

There was a review being trolled and also something to do with the bingo card. I just opened the attached file they sent me showing my review. I shelved it as nope and put a note in private notes to remind me why.
Scarlet's Web 3 years ago
I have just looked at the book on GR and I can still see my review but it's glitched to me and only showing me a link that was in my private notes.
Kerri 3 years ago
If I sort by new I can see your rating there, and the link... :/ I bet that's why, the link ended up public. Maybe if you appeal on the basis of your profile being glitchy yesterday? We had a conversation about it!
Kerri 3 years ago
This is on Promise of Shadows, not sure if that ended up being the book causing the issue in the end or not, just thought I'd add!
Scarlet's Web 3 years ago
That is the book they said the problem was with. On loading my backup they sent me into leafmarks the review is totally blank. If the link is showing it has to be because my account was all glitching out so bad. I doubt they will believe me though.
Kerri 3 years ago
That is ridiculous!! I really hope they reverse that. I've seen far 'worse' shelves tbqh but the point is that you shouldn't be banned over a *shelf*. Ugh :/
Angela 3 years ago
Happened to me too, I had moved all my books and reviews off GR after the big meltdown about shelf names - even though I did change names of my shelves and the most offensive was "no, thank you" - and stayed only in some groups. I hadn't even posted much in those groups. I just had begun to use GR again to shelf my no no's when I received an email from GR saying that I was banned for potential abusive behavior. Go figure.

Karlyn found one user who has over 7'000 books on there 1 star shelf; the profile is set to private, so there is no way to know who it is. But in my eyes a poor sucker, purely from a mathematical point of view: one book per day - 7'000 lousy books = 19 years of reading lousy books.
Scarlet's Web 3 years ago
I'm sorry that happened to you. It's really not a pleasant experience at all.

The only positive I guess is that now there will be less distractions and I will read more instead of spending all my time on GR.
Angela 3 years ago
You are right, I have more time to read and like it overall here more. I am still trying to figure out how to get my books over to LM. That may be a project when I have more time than I have right now.
I ported my GR books to Leafmarks a little while ago Angela. When I started I was afraid it would be a big pain, but it was actually pretty easy, just uploading the file.

This is horseshit. I can't believe they did this over a 'nope' shelf, I have a 'naughty naughty' shelf and they've never said a peep to me and mine is all about the authors behaviour, not how shitty their books are. Why are they hellbent on upsetting the readers and reviewers of the site, they're the ones who make it what it is.
I'm so sorry this has happened to you, I would be upset as well if I was you so you're not being silly. I'll miss your updates and reviews, you have great taste and have steered me to some cracking reads over the last few weeks.
From Dark Places 3 years ago
Not read all the comments there's to many but surely common sense has gone out the window, your shelves are personnel to you. You create them and I guess you even have the power to make them viewable or not and I've seen far worse shelf names than that.

This is obviously a guy with connections and he's filed a complaint somehow, which in itself is fucked up and childish. Unfortunately the nope shelf is a negative spin if you like and this is something that's come up before and something they occasionally latch on to. It seems we are coming into times you can't leave a too negative review, hopefully it's not a time where you have to continually worry about a ban if you say the wrong thing or upset the wrong person.
Sorry to hear it's happened but fuck em. Power to the people, pertishion time maybe.

I can only imagine how stunned you must have been. I have a "Never" shelf. That seems harsher than "Nope." And I got a warning about a year ago. I wonder if I'll get banned now, too? I'm starting to feel paranoid about shelving any books.

How repressive is GRs going to make their site, anyway?

Hugs to you. I'm so sorry.

So sorry to hear this happened to you! I've not been able to even look into the site over there without it putting me off reading since the big brouhaha. I hope you come to like this site, I moved over here and enjoy my time here so much more.

You have GOT to be kidding me! A "nope" shelf? Seriously? I'll be writing to GR to see what the hell the reasoning behind this one is...
It's a Mad Mad World 3 years ago
What???? That is just crazy!!! What the hell are they doing at GR?
I made a private group for myself on GR that no one else is in, just me. I keep notes about things there. I no longer mention anything about author behavior, etc. in the Private Notes section. After that got me in trouble too.
Spare Ammo 3 years ago
You do know they read what's in those groups periodically?
Yup. One of the mods got a note from grs about our private group. They're definitely looking.
yeah, I do know that. Thanks though!

It's the private notes bit then, or not very private notes it seems.

REGARDING PRIVACY AT GR --

Following the Great GR Purge of Sept 2013, I began taking notes. I've only gone through part of my archives, but this is what I've found so far. (Basically, there's no such thing as privacy at GR.)

I don't know how much of the original GR Feedback thread still exists, but according to my notes, someone asked at approximately Msg #4096 in that thread if comments pertaining to author behavior will be permitted in private notes. The question was reiterated in subsequent posts, and in fact someone started a new thread on that specific topic.

At approximately Msg #5245, GR Admin "Kara" (now long gone from the site) posted that an addition had been made to FAQ regarding . . . something. A few posts later, someone referenced Kara's post and implied that the new FAQ permitted "anything goes" in private notes.

However, by approximately Msg #5397, comments had been made regarding GR monitoring private groups. It was confirmed that GR did in fact do so, that people had received warnings based on the content in private groups, and it was further speculated that it was only a small leap to GR shutting down all author-based commentary, regardless where it might be posted.

I know that I shelved many of the books by authors who bought reviews from fiverr on my "54545475" shelf, and kept the info regarding their purchased reviews in private notes. Whether that's what led to my banning, I honestly don't know. Until these more recent events, I believed the TOS actually meant something: if you had info in your private notes, it was okay. Now, apparently, even that wasn't sacred.

It's easier and less work for them to just ban me for whatever reason they deem fit, than for them to look into, sort, ban etc all the socks and BBA behaviour that I report every other day. It's clear that it's not about the readers anymore and more about people keeping their mouths shut and to toe the line.

Goodreads SUUUUUUUUUUUCKS. And that's all I have to add to this conversation.
I'm sorry this happened Scarlet. I look forward to getting to know you :)

Thanks, and I you :)

I used my private notes for keeping a record of why every book was on my nope shelf, as far as I understood it, that's why the option was there. I always checked every review after posting to make sure that there was nothing against the guidlines or any mistakes made placing the notes. It's bloody ridiculous to ban or punish anyone over a note that no one can see but me.
Barks At The Moon 3 years ago
I still can't process this and am so sad to see you banned from GR.
Scarlet's Web 3 years ago
It's going to take a bit of getting used to myself. I will need to change my whole system of reviewing and I'm so used to having the company of everyone over there every day. I'm stuck in the house by myself most of the day because I have two slipped discs in my back and GR was like my lifeline to the outside world.
Barks At The Moon 3 years ago
Awww, you still have us over here :) I hate what GR is doing (ruining itself) but I love the groups and my friends and can't seem to tear myself away, though I probably should.
Rabbit Reads 3 years ago
That might be a good idea. Unless they permaban, which involves banning an IP number. There are ways around that though.
From Dark Places 3 years ago
I've always preferred it over here, more of a family, you get to know the regulars and have a bit of a laugh and you can post whatever the hell you want.

I think it's worth a shot. I know others that have done exactly that. So what if they ban you again? You would be no worse off than you are now.
Linda Hilton 3 years ago
Most returning accounts are quickly identified, and GR is going to be watching old friends and groups even more closely. Just sayin'.

If I went back, and I haven't even tried, I wouldn't go anywhere near friends and groups. I'd just mine the database.
Lornographic Material 3 years ago
Unfortunately, Linda's right. I've watched several people pop up again and disappear just as quickly.

Scarlet, if you do try to return, I'd wait at least a couple of months.
Scarlet's Web 3 years ago
Yeah, I have seen that too. I just hope it doesn't affect my daughters account, I haven't seen her tonight to ask her yet. I'm going to read the last few ARCs that I have and then I think I'm going to make time and read all the books that I have put off getting to and just have some fun.
Lornographic Material 3 years ago
Awesome idea. I've performed a mass exodus today. Downloaded my import file from Goodreads and uploaded here, Leafmarks, and LibraryThing. I honestly don't want to have a fucking thing to do with GR anymore.

I think your ban hit me hard because you're so damn nice. When you do give a negative review you're usually polite and, sometimes, even apologetic. There are far worse people on that site (can name at least five authors that should have been banned ages ago), and I have a feeling they used you as an example. "If it can happen to her, it can happen to any of you."

I could be wrong and overreacting, but I'm sticking by my guns.
Linda Hilton 3 years ago
That's almost creepy, E.

Direct quote from email I sent to friends last night about this situation:

I think they used Scarlet as an example. "See, we can even ban someone who doesn't violate the rules and is nice most of the time. IT COULD HAPPEN TO YOU AT ANY SECOND."
Scarlet's Web 3 years ago
I would hug you if I could reach across the ocean! Have a virtual one instead ( hugs )
Lornographic Material 3 years ago
That is weird lol. But how else does one explain this? I mean, come on... Scarlet? Are you kidding me? You can't get much nicer than Scarlet. Shit, I've even seen her explain TOS stuff to BBAs in threads without losing her cool. She's one of the calmest heads among us.

But, yeah, I'm preaching to the choir. Something's rotten in Denmark, so I'm out.
That is so bizarre. It's like the BINGO author. They were all over that, deleting shelvings and non-reviews like crazy. But then other books/authors they just let stand, even when there are full blown reviews that break TOS.

So screwed up. And so wrong to do to someone for absolutely no reason. :(

I'm starting to wonder how much longer I can keep on at GRs, too. I basically use it for cataloging books and a couple of private groups. But wondering if I'll be next, because of my shelf names is making me wonder if it's worth the stress of feeling the ax hovering over my head.
Scarlet's Web 3 years ago
I have to admit that although I'm really missing GR, I do feel somewhat lighter because I'm not worrying about being monitored or flagged/reported over silly things.
Lornographic Material 3 years ago
I have enough stressors in life without worrying about whether or not all my reviews and other hard work is going to disappear. I don't want to worry about having to back everything up on multiple sites, either, so I'll just chill here. :)
That's one of the biggest things I hate about GR. Every single day I wonder if it's going to be the day I get banned. Every day.

Only just seen this, Scarlet... I feel your pain :(

GR and I were BFF's since 2007 but we had a falling out at the beginning of last year and we don't talk any more. I wouldn't trust them as far as I could throw them but the way they got rid of you has to be an all time low for them. Take consolation that you're better off without them and it's their loss. I know it's sore now, but you really are better off out of it. They don't deserve you.

'Nope' is a pretty lame excuse to ban you...it's not like you had a 'Keek' shelf or anything :P
Scarlet's Web 3 years ago
I got an email from GR today admitting that the review they banned me for was glitched and was caused by a problem that caused my private notes to show instead of being only viewable to me.

They replied today saying... "Thank you for your reply. We have been working on issues related to the problem you reported and we will continue to look into fixing it.

However, we will not reinstate your account.

Sincerely,
The Goodreads Team"

So even though it wasn't my fault and they are admitting it wasn't my fault, they won't undo the ban.

Apparently, so I have been told anyway, my being banned got me put on STGRB as a bully, although they will struggle to find any evidence to justify that claim anywhere in my reviews or blog etc.
Spare Ammo 3 years ago
So if their software malfunctions you pay the price? Everybody needs to pack up and move.
Kitty Horror 3 years ago
That is absolutely unbelievable. They've admitted they're wrong but still won't lift the ban, I'd be pressing them for why. Bullshit, absolute bullshit.

That makes total sense. In bizarro world. Or Star Trek's mirror universe. Or using Transformers Shattered Glass logic.

WTF?
Scarlet's Web 3 years ago
There's nothing more I can do and to be honest I don't know that I would want to go back there after being treated this way. At least they have admitted it was a problem on their end and nothing I had done.
nospin 3 years ago
They have treated you horrendously. I don't blame you for not going back.
That's really low of GR's :/
But that's their loss, because they get the trolls, and BL gets the readers and reviewers :)
Also I "predict" _lol_ that soon rather than later Gr's will be known as MediocreReads!

GR says private notes remain private and no glitch. https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/2219174

Keeping it shady, as usual.

I appreciate you taking the time to get back to me. I would like to point out that the link was in my private notes and wasn't meant to show in the review space at all. I even double checked all the books I shelved when adding them at the time to make sure the links were in private when posting, that link was definitely in private and was not showing in the review when posted. I don't understand why I was banned for something that was outwith my control. It seems harsh and unfair when there was no way I could have known without going through every single book on my shelf to find each individual review or shelving. I had already reported my account was glitching previously and even posted a general status about it.

I know you may not want to, Scarlet, but honestly, I'd be tempted to call them out on that. It's utterly ridiculous that they're holding to the ban even though they've admitted the fault is on their side. But I'm one who stands on principle more than anything else - even if I wasn't going to use the site, I'd want them to admit their mistake and reverse it. Ugh. It makes me furious just to think about it.
Scarlet's Web 3 years ago
I honestly feel that to continue talking or trying to reason with them at this point would be like banging my head against a brick wall. I've wasted enough time just trying to get them to admit that it was a fault on their end and nothing I had done. I just wanted to vindicate myself and have my say with them and I feel I have done that now. I wouldn't go back even if they did reverse the ban, I refuse to let them benefit from my reviews when they don't respect their users enough to treat them honestly and properly.
Linda Hilton 3 years ago
Looking at it from their point of view as a business, it would be virtually impossible for them to reinstate you. They would then be admitting that other people MAY have been banned in error, and they'd have everyone clamoring for a review of their case, etc., etc., etc. The bottom line is that they really don't care about their users; they only care about their business. You can almost hear them saying, "It's nothing personal, Scarlet. We don't care enough about you for it to be personal."

Yeah.
They have pretty much denied sending you that email.
Linda Hilton 3 years ago
WHAT?????
Scarlet's Web 3 years ago
Like Linda says, it could open up a huge can of worms if they did and could cause a lot of people wanting their ban to be looked into as a result. It's not really in their interest to admit it. I suppose I should be grateful they at least admitted it in the mail to me, though I think they knew they wouldn't get peace from me until I had vindicated myself lol.

I've had enough of them now, they can claim whatever they like, I'll just sit and laugh while their site goes down the toilet being over run by shills and BBAs
I'm disappointed that they've denied sending it, but hardly surprised.
It just pisses me off. I asked her point blank if she was saying they didn't send it and the reply was that they have no such problem so they didn't send it.

Arrgghhh!!! A site bug led to your being banned but you still cannot have an account here anyway? I'm so glad I don't do much outside a few groups there (which are dwindling; I look forward to booklikes someday stop being so blog-happy and trying to be a refugee for goodreaders by doing stuff like upgrading discussion rooms and other features; once Leafmarks beefs up groups I'm really pressing my goodreads groups to echo there or move completely).
Char's Horror Corner 3 years ago
Oh, didn't you know? You don't actually have to BE a bully to be listed on the wall of honor over there. All you have to have done is piss someone off by asking them not to spam or by writing a less than stellar review of someone's work.
Lornographic Material 3 years ago
From what I can tell, all you only have to be a member of Booklikes to be listed on that horrible site. :)
Derrolyn Anderson 3 years ago
True. I made the list by calling out someone who cut-and-paste spammed their book on several of my book's Amazon reviews :

"If you liked this, then you'll LOVE __ "

It's hysterically funny, because I don't even review :P
I do support a reviewer's right to review or shelve a book any way they see fit, so I'm happy to stay there.
Scarlet's Web 3 years ago
I have never been on their site and would never have known if someone hadn't messaged me to let me know. Makes no difference to me what opinion total strangers online have of me. I have to say though, it was nice of them to create all the extra traffic and attention to my blog, it's really boosted the numbers and stats. :)
It is funny it's increased your traffic, but not surprising to me. Their lists of "trolls" is actually a great resource for finding great reviewers to follow on GR, BL and book blogs. :D
Barks At The Moon 3 years ago
Hey, looks like I'm in good company! They had such a slow news day last year that they dedicated an entire rant to one of my posts. I felt so special.
Scarlet's Web 3 years ago
Life is too short to spend every day trawling review blogs and profiles for every little tidbit of information just so they have something to post on their destructive website. What must their lives be like, or lacking, for them to obsess over what other people do or say so much. Surely their time would be much better and more positively spent making the most out of their own lifes rather than obsessing over others or trying to hurt/attack people they don't even know. I find that rather sad and I have to admit that I feel bad for them that it's taken over their lives in such a negative way.
Lornographic Material 3 years ago
If the authors who run that site spent half the time working on their craft (aka writing) as they do posting hate speech, they might not receive half the negative reviews they do. Instead of bettering themselves, they attempt to degrade others. It really is quite sad. I stopped worrying about them about a year ago when I realized they don't matter to anyone but themselves. Fighting them is like fighting in a cesspool. You're only going to get shit on you, and it's still going to be a cesspool when you get done.
Char's Horror Corner 3 years ago
Well said, E.
...Bookfanatic 3 years ago
They are a living example of something that I have long believed to be true, sad but true and that is the fact that "There are some people in this world who can only feel good about themselves by making others feel bad." (or at least attempting to do so.)
Beyond disgusting, I'm so sorry this happened to you Scarlet.
