I read a review (NYT maybe) that made it sound like everyone was pretty reprehensible and/or pathetic or selfish, a la Gone Girl. Since I'm not much in the mood for that, I decided to skip it, no matter how fluid & funny. What's your take on the "books about awful people" angle?

Helen is very giving and genuinely enjoys helping people. Sara is a typical adolescent; hence self-absorbed but not unlikeable. Ben truly goes off the deep end in his selfishness but is on the road to redemption at the end. It is nothing like Gone Girl, which, by the way, I liked.
