I did a teen program at the library where we turned old books into safes and purses. :)

Acquire a hard cover book you don't mind tearing up and open to somewhere between pages 25-30. Rubberband the front pages to the front book cover so they don't get in the way as you cut. Keeping the spine of the book straight, cut, using an exacto knife, the pages out of the middle. Make sure there is at least a one inch distance between the hole and the edge of the pages. Make it as deep as you want, being careful that the spine remains straight. Use a paintbrush to glue the edge of the pages of the book where the hole is. Glue the outside pages together (but not the first 25 pages you have rubberbanded). Cut out some felt and glue it to the inside where the hole is.Place some wax paper on the hole over the felt and take the rubberband off the front. Shut the book and let it stay flat for at least 24 hours. Put another book on it so the weight prevents warping
as the glue dries.
