I love this series; I've read it twice. I agree with your assessment that KSR uses the First 100 as archetypes to drive his ideas about different ways of running Mars, but I didn't mind it so much. I've always thought of it as a scientific tour de force with some allegorical characters handling all the politics. I'm ok with this, but I can see how other readers wouldn't be as happy.

LOL I’m almost 20% through the next book, Green Mars, and the first two main characters I’ve met seem more likeable so far. The plot itself also seems to have a little more direction to it, although I haven’t read the synopsis so the direction I’m imagining might be completely wrong.
HA! Well, at least the writing is strong enough to provoke a reaction ;)
