I agree with how you see Peake. Tolkien’s books are quests, journies with a noble purpose. Peake describes a place: ancient, clausthobic, unforgiving and the people who claw their way to survival. I found it both beautiful and brutal. It’s not so much a story as an indictment of what those who have power and those who seek it do to us, each other and themselves.
Your statement beautifully summarises the book when compared to Tolkien Mike.
