This was brought up to read in my book club. Looks like we haven't missed anything by not choosing it.

I don't think you did. There's much more meaningful books you could choose, at least in my opinion.
Yep. This is one book that I just don't get. People LOVE it--I hated it, for all the reasons you've said. I'm glad I'm not alone!

I don't get the love for this one either. I wanted to like it but the longer it went on (and it was very short) the more I disliked it.

I have this one on my pile; a friend said he'd read it and enjoyed it (he didn't rave, he just said 'ah, it was good'). Now you've got me even more curious and I'm going to have to crack it open soon. Good review!

Thanks! Well I hope you enjoy it, I hate getting all curious just to be let down. Can't wait to see what you think.
I have never read a book by this author, and I don't think I ever will. I´ve read snippets in Portuguese _ real close to Brazilian Portuguese _ and I've just wanted to gouge my eyes out.

Maybe nothing was lost in translation then. I must just dislike his writing style.

Dang, so many people come in asking for this at the bookstore, I think it's on a school reading list or something. I read the back and figured it wouldn't be for me and I was right- from what I can tell I would feel the same was as you. I can't stand "feel good" books or "feel bad" books for that matter. It's cheap. "Emotional Porn" is a perfect term, I think (thanks Russel Brand).

Amen. Emotions aren't that simple. I'm a completely different person when I'm feeling sad or happy and it fluctuates based on what's going on around me. My friends can tell almost instantly based on how loud or quiet I am. Too far to one end of the spectrum is just too fake for me to enjoy. (l hate Russell Brand for rocking eyeliner better than me :p)
I have always suspected that the people who like this (and they are out there), are also the people who like Jonathan Livingston Seagull.

I'm currently resisting every urge to buy one of his self-help books to see how it compares.
