Right?? The ability to conceive of irony is beyond them.
The idea that they think they are going to be Fitzwilliam Darcy in their modern appropriation of Jane Austen is simply preposterous. And if they haven't figured out that Lizzie Bennett is totally subversive, then they haven't actually read the book.
