LOL, I'll steer clear of this one!

Well, hey you might like it. If you're a Narnia fan you might like it a lot. :)

You've confirmed my suspicions about this one. Thanks.

I'm mad at myself! Most especially because The Wright Brothers by David McCullough came in for me at the library at the same time as this one, and I returned it because I knew I couldn't listen to both in the time allowed. I wish I had returned this one instead!

YES about those kids! I never "met" a more unlikable group of characters in my life. Thanks for chiming in-I feel a little better now.

I really hated this one the first time I read it, but then I ended up reading the second book in the series and liked that one much more, especially the chapters about Julia who has to learn magic the hard way, off the grid, not in the fancy-pants college that Quentin goes to.
Char's Horror Corner 5 years ago
Yeah, none of the other members of their group seemed to get upset that Julia had to do that. That was another thing I didn't like about them.
Maybe I would try the second one at some point. Have you read the third?

Julia really comes into her own in the 2 later books, which is part of what made me start to like the series. The others find they have a lot to learn from her. I reviewed the series and talked about my changing feelings here: http://jaylia3.booklikes.com/post/1053430/i-hated-it-and-then-i-loved-it-a-series-review-of-the-magicians

That's an excellent review and your first paragraph perfectly summed up my feelings. I enjoyed what you had to say about the next two books in the series. You make them sound so much better than this one. :)

Your photo reminds me a lot of Kevin Costner's wife from Field of Dreams. Has anyone ever told you that?

Thanks! If you like Julia you might try the second book since so much of it is about her, and as I mentioned in my review I just skipped all the Quentin stuff in my first reading of it.

It's been so long since I've seen Field of Dreams I had to Google Image it but I see what you mean. She's a smidge younger than me though (just a few decades . . .) so in person the resemblance would be a tad less I think.

I have always thought she was pretty and I loved her energy in that movie. :)

I will think about continuing with the second book. Do you think I will miss much by not having finished The Magicians?

I think you'd be okay, though you might want to read a synopsis or skim the last chapter--I know you were listening to the audio so that would mean you'd have to get your hands on a physical copy of the book. Something pretty dramatic happens to Alice near the end that remains important for the rest of the series. The Wikipedia article on the book has a synopsis, though the details about Alice are on the scant side. When I read the second book it had been a while since I read the first but I was fine, so Grossman must work in a recap of the things you need to know.

Thanks!
I've done that too. Sometimes knowing when to quit and admitting it to yourself is very hard.
That's a shame to hear. I had high hopes for this one; it seemed like something that would be right up my alley. I'll start it, for sure, but I'll probably give up before I hit 70% if I doesn't click with me, just to learn from your experience here.
Char's Horror Corner 5 years ago
I wouldn't blame you. I usually employ a 10% rule, but for whatever reason I let it keep going.
I normally do about 25%, but I've had a couple I gave up quite late because I was enjoying them at that point and then something went terribly wrong.

Dang it. I did have high hopes for this one, although your dislike will not deter me from finding out for myself. But I have lowered my expectations accordingly. I wasn't sure when I would get to it anyway, and this doesn't make me want to move it up on the long, long list of shit I want to read.

I am interested in your thoughts on it when you do get to it. I was looking at some reviews this afternoon and they're split.
