I didn't mention this in my review, but Tom Ripley reminded me a lot of Undine Spragg from The Custom of the Country. Undine isn't physically violent, but she is every bit as emotionally violent, and she's just as much of a gaping maw of need and want with no character of her own.

Great review Char! And I am so relieved (you know why!).

@Char and @MR: As first time readers, did you sit on the edge of your seats - even a little bit - at the scene with Marge and the shoe, for instance? :D

Thank you!

Yes! There was so much tension overall. I didn't care much for Marge, (did she seem rather vapid to you?), but no one deserves a shoe. LOL

Yeah, I'm not a Marge fan either, but I loved that it was the weakest character that came closest to making Tom squirm. ;) You know, because he was so superior to everyone.

Yes, it was perfect. I very much enjoyed the book and I'm glad I read it with you all. It was fun!

Yes - I was wondering the entire time who he was going to kill next. Also, the scene where he murders Dickie was so shockingly visceral that it made me react with physical revulsion. My daughter was sitting with me while I was reading, and I kept gasping and saying "Oh my god." "Oh my god."

It was! I'm sure we've both read more graphic and horrible things in the daily news, but how Highsmith crafted that scene was masterful. I felt like I was in the boat with my mouth agape.
Great review!

Thank you too, it was fun! (Even if I did fall behind)
It was great! And I found funny seeing the advanced posts and the reaching those pages and thinking "so that's why they were all screaming!"
Lol, that caveat! And then you process to ram the spoilers! I had fun reading this review.
