I've always wondered if the people who submit to these types of organisations, no matter their intelligence, aren't trying to escape thinking for themselves. These types of cults/societies/churches offer people answers without effort; everything is black and white, only submit and be free from the hard questions in life. From there, I can only believe it's a slippery slope down the abyss via a steady program of desensitisation. I might (probably) be totally wrong, but it's the only way I can make what these people do imaginable.

Sounds credible. Afterall - thinking for yourself is hard, so it makes sense that people just give up and let someone else do the thinking and directing.

I often thought along those lines as well. In this case, you could be right. The People's Temple started off as a good organization. They put their money and their time where their mouths were and they were champions of integration. Jim and his wife were the first people in their state to adopt a black child. Somewhere along the line though, things got corrupted, (absolute power corrupts and all that).
I guess I can...maybe...understand giving up the hard decisions to someone else. But to take my own life? I cannot fathom ever giving anyone that power over me.

I totally agree. I react badly to anyone telling me what to do or think, so I'm definitely not a candidate.
