Your use of the phrase "Spain's golden age" got me thinking. I wonder if any nation realizes their golden age as they are going through it, or is it something that only History can show?

That's a very Tolstoy-ish question. According to him, usually we react to the situation at hand, for the best short term result. It's very difficult to look at the big picture while we're in it. It is only later, while analyzing people's actions, that we associate greatness in them. Have you read War and Peace yet? Tolstoy examines your very question in it.
I have read W&P, but it was back in '03. So it has been a while.
