I've been reading it since...the fourth book came out. I've reread the entire series over and over and it's really the only one I collect as soon as they come out. I can wait on others if I have to...but not this. I've yet to do a full review...so I plan to break it into two parts. One on the story and one on the audiobook. I'm writing it out now...but it might take me a bit. I'm still playing catch up since I've been gone.
I'm listening to this at the moment too - I think I'm about 2/3rds of the way through. I've read it once, so this is a 're-read' and I think I'm going to pick up the rest of the series in audio format as well. I am really enjoying the narrator.
n.b.: this is the only Holmes pastiche I've ever read and liked. Laurie King does an excellent job!
Yeah! I hope we can gab about it! Yes, I'm planning on picking up the rest of the series in audio format. I have the books but I really enjoyed listening to the reader's voices for the characters. They are all so perfect; Holmes sounds exactly as King describes him in the first chapter and Russell sounds like I've heard her in my brain forever.
I actually like a few pastiches but I think King's are the best. She took something so improbable and didn't force the characters into it but rather allowed them go and she followed...if that makes sense. Also, she makes Holmes and Watson human...not in bad ways either. Too often people try to humanize Holmes and make him...nice. This version cares about people but he's not nice, even to Russell at times.
Exactly! Holmes was never meant to be nice! Or have much in the way of conscience, or guilt. Ms. King gets that right (at least in the first book). I'm really looking forward to reading the rest of them.
Can't wait to see what you think! I'll admit, there are some I like better then others but as a series, I find it very strong. The next one's due out next February, I think.
