I never finished this book. Not sure that I ever will either. Maybe your explanation on why it was written the way it is will give me a reason to finish. I think my problem with the book was that all the back round noise (crazy, wild childs I have!) made it impossible for my brain to properly work.
I don't think my explanation will help you finish it, but it might bring light to some things.
I was so frustrated with that book. When I read, except at night, I normally get less than 5 or 10 pages in before one of my kids start pissing with each other. Then the fighting starts. Then I cry (okay, maybe not cry, but I wanna), etc. It's like it is all played on a loop.
There were so many reasons I should have disliked this book but I wound up liking it quite a bit. I think a lot of the extraneous crap wound have been pruned if Larsson hadn't died before it was published.
