Hi. I totally agree with you on the lack of road-novel feel. Why would it be advertised as such? Is to pay tribute to one of the Gods - the mythos of the American road trip? No, I didn't feel like this was a road trip either. However, one of the reasons I really, really liked it is probably that I read without reading any of the blurb or advertising, so had no expectations of it at all.
I love Gaiman but his books are either hit or miss for me. I really liked this one and loved Neverwhere but Coraline and The Graveyard Book left me cold.
What I did like about American Gods was the understated way in which the story was told. Did you get that feeling when reading it?
Yes, but I think considering your comment, that he included Shadow in that understatement. I can understand the reason for it, but that part of it didn't work for me.
Stock characters for some of them - like Laura. And Sam, Sam didn't bug me the first time I read it, but this time - she doesn't work for me in a variety of ways.

Thank you! I didn't think this book was ALL THAT either.
