I was just a kid when A New Hope came out in theaters, but I remember being super excited about Leia's character. In 1977, she was something I'd never seen before: A heroine in an action movie who actually rescued her rescuers by being the smartest and toughest of the bunch, and who spit in the eye of their romantic notions of sweet, helpless princesses in distress. Plus, she withstood torture and tricked her torturers by lying convincingly to their faces.

Is it problematic? Yes. Was the third movie with those dumb ewoks a huge step back? Yes. But that first movie really seemed groundbreaking to 11 year old me.
