I was lucky enough to have my first novel accepted for publication by HarperCollins New Zealand. It is a YA (young adult) fantasy set in New Zealand, called 'The Bone Tiki', which subsequently won Best First Book at the 2010 NZ Post Children's Book Awards. It is first in what has become the Aotearoa Series. Two sequels have followed it: 'The Taniwha's Tear', 2010; and 'The Lost Tohunga', 2011. They blend the mythology and history of New Zealand, with modern day fantasy adventure. They're available through several New Zealand/Australian based websites, if you're interested.I've also written a four book YA fantasy series set in India, through Penguin India. Entitled The Return of Ravana, the series comprises 'Pyre of Queens', and the forthcoming sequels 'The Ghost Bride' [Note in India this book is entitled 'Swayamvara'], 'Souls In Exile' and 'King of Lanka', all through Penguin Books. The series blends myth, history, past lives, and echoes of the famous Indian epic, 'The Ramayana'.The latest series is an epic fantasy series called 'the Moontide quartet': 1st book out in late 2012. This is an adult market series, not YA. I like to think of it as "Game of Thrones meets the Crusades". i think anyone into big sprawling epics will enjoy.I've been fortunate to pick up 2 New Zealand awards for my YA work (The Bone Tiki won 'Best First Book' at the NZ Post Children's Book Awards in 2009, and Pyre of Queens won the LIANZA YA Award for 2012 (LIANZA being the NZ Librarians Assoc), which is a nice endorsement of the books. As you'll note from the above, I like to ground my writing in mythology and history, both of which I've studied at university. I've lived in India and the UK, as well as travelled in South East Asia, Europe and America.Away from writing, I love football, movies, wine, travel, obscure music, and being with my wife and children.

by David Hair & Cath Mayo First book in the Olympus Trilogy. This is written in present tense. I can see why in the first chapter. It gives it an ethereal, mystical past feeling and as it follows some known mythology, it could have made a good start to the story if it hadn't carried on in presen...

Loved it. Fastest I've read a 700 pager in a long time.http://abitterdraft.com/2013/09/mages-blood-by-david-hair.htmlThe folks at Jo Fletcher don’t seem to be capable of disappointing. I’ve yet to read a book I wasn’t pleased with from them. What first drew me to Mage’s Blood was the clash of civiliz...

To mangle a line from the movie Zoolander, New Zealand is very hot right now. Our actors and actresses are on the big and small screens in the US, and our directors making waves with giant blockbusters and indie darlings. And, of course, New Zealand has produced a number of amazing authors and stori...
