Centuries slip past the day of a nuclear schism that separates humanity into two immortal factions, grotesque demons and highly evolved humans with god-like powers. Emotions and technology, communication and agriculture all rendered useless in a moment. The same nuclear weapon used to end the lives of billions peculiarly mutated plant and animal life to thrive, thus reclaiming the planet and restoring it to its former glory. Two humans, Maeve and Atlas, happen upon each other and develop ancient feelings of love for each other. These feelings turn to guilt and confusion quickly, and Atlas leaves their drowning city to search for answers. Maeve is consumed by her woes of abandonment, but eventually hears rumors of Atlas’s newest affliction. Upon visiting his ancient ruinous home, Maeve discovers the bodies of dozens of her compatriots, and discovers Atlas’s sinister mission to ensure that he and Maeve are the last people on Earth. In order to end his tirade, Maeve seeks the help of a demon who seems to know more than he leads on. Cobalt, a singular member of the demon race, shows her glimpses of the past through an ancient computer files, musical prophecies of her salvation, and scientific facts that disprove the white lie Atlas often fed her about their world. Together, they seek the essence and souls of three individuals, in hopes that Maeve’s telekinetic strengths will improve before she seeks to destroy Atlas once and for all.
