This is a well written fantasy novel, the world building is very well thought out and presented nicely, the characters are well rounded and interesting. This book should have been catnip for me, and yet it was a chore to read. I was stuck in a blizzard and I still had trouble forcing myself to read ...

A unique take on a magic system, but all is not what it seems in regards to the rules governing the magic. In fact, finding out what's causing these strange things to happen is a major part of the plot. Traditional fantasy main character from humble beginnings. (Interestingly, all the most powerful ...

I just couldn't bear to pick this back up. :( I generally love Laura Anne Gilman but for some reason this book just didn't click with me. Maybe I'll try it again later.

Grapes and soil determining the type of magic. Slavery as an institutionalized practice. Flesh and Fire...

Enter a world like no other. A world where wine is the essence of everything. The novel starts off well by explaining the intricacies of wine magic. While needed and interesting, the passages can be a bit dry since there is much discussion and vocabulary relating to wine. However, I felt like I need...

Gilman has created an original and interesting method for magic to be created and used. Magic is created (grown?)in grapes, which are then harvested by slaves. Next, the grapes are mashed together to form mustus. Finally, they are turned into magic wine called spellwine, or ordinary wine called vin ...
