The death of her husband freed Serena Riverton from life as an abused sex-object. Now, her brother plans to sell her to another vile man.

This time, Serena flees, but finds herself stranded and near penniless. When a passing gentleman offers help, Serena accepts, and develops a new plan: become a rich man's mistress so she can leave at any time.

Believing herself barren, Serena initiates a passionate encounter with her rescuer. However, Francis, Lord Middlethorpe is already committed to a sweet-natured lady. He finds Serena refuge with an elderly relative, and must return to his life. Then Serena discovers she's pregnant.

They have no choice but to marry, but assailed by Serena's scheming brothers, Francis's appalled relatives and Serena's painful past, is there any hope for the loving future they both seek?

Please Note: Story contains references to the heroine's sexually abusive first marriage that some readers may find disturbing.

4.5 A Gentle Man . . .
I loved Francis Haile, Lord Middlethorpe, in An Arranged Marriage more than any other rogue introduced in the first book of Jo Beverley's Company of Rogues series. Why? It wasn't his 'soulful beauty of a poet', nor his 'exquisite manners', nor his very supportive friendship Nicholas and Eleanor Dela...

I loved Francis ever since The arranged marriage. He deserved his happiness. He was good, honorable, an enticing virgin with a heart of gold.

4.0 Jo Beverley's "Forbidden" - #4 in the Rogues series
Borderline keeper for me. Detested the heroine's brothers and the hero's mother, as well as the never-ending miscommunication and misunderstandings between all of the main characters. On the other hand, I couldn't put it down ...

3.0 Forbidden (Zebra Historical Romance)
Better than Unwilling Bride and as good in a different way as Christmas Angel. This novel of the Rogues series is actually the first one Beverley wrote years before she was first published. Francis, Lord Middlethorpe is a quirky and unusual male lead for a romance novel. I liked Francis for his hone...

Serena the siren or the slut? I'm hard pressed to decide. Lady Anne Peckworth is the loser here. Just like nice guys, nice girls finish last. Fortunately Anne is gracious, if hurt. Francis shouldn't have led her on. Sure Serena and Francis didn't want to hurt Anne, but they did anyway.
