I began this book with some caution, as I've heard mixed reviews. I was wary of the brutality for which it was praised as reminiscent of George R.R. Martin, as that is my least favorite thing about him. The lengthy cast list at the beginning was a little bit intimidating. There are a lot of characte...

This is the worst book I have ever read. I hate it more than any kind of book, movie, music or any other type of multimedia ever. I DESPISE it. I would give it a negative five stars if I could.

Steven Erikson's first entry in the ten book series The Malazan Book of the Fallen is a promising opening entry for the series. It is also to me a masterclass in how to create entertaining gritty fantasy fiction. There were visible flaws in dialogue and it took a brief time to adjust to the novel's ...

I'm amazed - both by the fact that some (many) people consider this book unreadable, and by the fact that I had never heard of this fine Canadian author.Common complaints have concluded that the characters have no depth. I guess if you want character-based stories, this book, and presumably its sequ...

I have heard a lot of good things about this series. There is certainly a lot going on in 'Gardens of the Moon,' but stories of the many individuals involved are so splintered that they are difficult to follow. I am disappointed with the characterization—one fellow seems so much like the other(s) th...

I'm being generous with that 2, by the way.Epic fantasy by Steven Erikson that bored me unconscious (really). I get it, what he's going for, and I get it, the world building and all, and I can see why people might like it or why it might win an award, but I hated it.And of course, I'll hear about h...

I got this as it was highly recommended to me by a friend who knows I enjoy epic fantasy. It was good. It was well-written. However, I think that in its epic scope, it loses something. I usually very much enjoy stories where you're just dropped into the action, rather than sitting through lots of ex...
