This is a violent tale, but Pelecanos' stories are usually violent. That just adds to the power of the tales, and they are almost always unputdownable for me once I start one of his books. The time period is totally nailed in this one and it's full of bad people. You can't go wrong with this guy! ...

“The thirst for knowledge is like a piece of ass you know you shouldn't chase; in the end, you chase it just the same.” The best of the Stefanos novels and my second favorite book Pelecanos has written! In somewhat of a parallel to Nick Stefanos's character, the first two books in the series are a l...

Filled with themes of forgiveness, responsibility, and redemption, while still being just a simple, handsomely-told story about everyday working men, this book is pure Pelecanos. All the elements of his work are here, from the spare writing, to the constant theme of what it means and what it takes t...

The history of television is littered with intelligent product that never got the ratings, acclaim, or chance to achieve the success of the flashy but simplistic C.S.I or Law & Order. One recent example of this would be Southland, which was granted a second chance at life by TNT. Perhaps the great...

I enjoyed this book. It builds slowly but by the end I was gripped. What could have been written as a straight-forward crime thriller became a brooding meditation on the effects of crime on young boys and men - and their families. But that sounds a bit analytical. The thing I enjoyed about this book...

An excellent collection of short stories (some very dark and twisted) by one of my favorites.

I am a die hard fan of the HBO series The Wire. i have always maintained that that tv show "read" more like a novel than it did a typical tv show. It had characters with depth, there were no good guys and bad guys only people who were varying shades of grey. It had layers and a definite, recogniz...

I have absolutely no idea why these are considered mystery stories. At most they're crime fiction, but in many cases that's at best a loose tie. These stories strike me more as short stories that didn't get in to the Best American Short Stories 2008 collection. The stories are fine, and some are ...
