Sides chronicles the fate of the ship and crew quite well. Driving home points in some cases but showcasing what happened just after the crew left for the voyage (in many cases, these events if known might have changed the outcome). The story is gripping and well told.

It's rare that a 19th-century history becomes a page-turner, but there I was, well after midnight, unwilling to put the book down until I found out what happened to Captain DeLong and his crew on their desperate quest for survival in the truly unforgiving arctic. That such inhospitable places exist...

This book is an honest, thought-provoking account of events that it seems unbelievable are not common knowledge. Sides explains the atrocities POW's experienced at the hands of the Japanese Imperial Army during WWII on the Philippine island of Luzon. He also does his best to explain why they behaved...
