THIS COLLECTION OF SHORT STORIES AND VIGNETTES MARKED ERNEST HEMINGWAY'S AMERICAN DEBUT AND MADE HIM FAMOUS When In Our Time was published in 1925, it was praised by Ford Madox Ford, John Dos Passos, and F. Scott Fitzgerald for its simple and precise use of language to convey a wide range of complex emotions, and it earned Hemingway a place beside Sherwood Anderson and Gertrude Stein among the most promising American writers of that period. In Our Time contains several early Hemingway classics, including the famous Nick Adams stories "Indian Camp," "The Doctor and the Doctor's Wife," "The Three Day Blow," and "The Battler," and introduces readers to the hallmarks of the Hemingway style: a lean, tough prose -- enlivened by an car for the colloquial and an eye for the realistic that suggests, through the simplest of statements, a sense of moral value and a clarity of heart. Now recognized as one of the most original short story collections in twentieth-century literature, In Our Time provides a key to Hemingway's later works.

The middle section bursts forth with life and connectivity, loss, death, and reveals just who is th...

In Our Time was the first collection of short stories from Hemingway, and it's a landmark collection. I'd read some of his stories when I was younger, and while I enjoyed them very much I don't ever feel like I fully appreciated them for what they were. That's what happens with age. The older you ge...

3.0 In our Time
A series of short vignettes, though with a recurring character. This was Hemingway's first, the one that brought him to the public's notice and started his career. With his sparse, clear style these are stories that are about pain and war, about the American Southwest and our war with the Indian'...

I actually didn't like anything by Hemingway until I read this when I was getting my master's.

I'm still not a Hemingway fan but this collection of early short stories are various enough so that there's a good chance you'll find something to like about it.It's also fun to teach as I can attest, having used it in my high school English comp classes.
