On a bleak wintry morning some years ago I was summoned to the office of our naval attaché at the American embassy in Kabul. If one can block out the fact that the chase story is completely implausible then there is some very interesting stuff to consider. Interesting, worrying and brutal.

A very good, if rather episodic, look at Alaska's history from the prehistoric to the modern, with lots of details and personal stories. Great for the armchair or actual traveler. Proved to be very useful for me in planning my upcoming trip to the 49th State. For the longer review, please go here:ht...

I've never read Michener's work before, but this book left me awed with his knowledge of history and storytelling ability. The book begins with a brief section on the formation of the islands, then plunges into a novella (100 pages) about the arrival of the original Polynesian settlers. After that, ...

I bought this book after loving Michener's Hawaii, hoping for a similarly wonderful reading experience. I was disappointed. The best I can say is that I learned some things--the book takes you around Afghanistan in the 1940s, introducing a variety of places and cultures and including pertinent histo...

as always, i love his historical detail and the vast amount of information he provides. he chose a weird way to do it in this book, though, and it detracted because it was so undeveloped and obviously a tool to get his research across. the middle of this book was extremely compelling to me; the re...

it's long and time consuming, but i enjoyed nearly every page of it. he says so much about so much (colonialism, religion, politics, race, history) and i love his detail. it makes for a long book, but i always find him worth it.

It took me a long while to get through this book (my edition has 1,235 pages), but it was well worth it.Michener's 1980 novel covers the history of South Africa from prehistoric times up until the late 1970s -- which means that it misses out the Mandela presidency and other events associated with th...

This is average Michener, but still worthwhile. About a writer's life, which he knew well. I should reread it myself now that I am more active as an author.

Read this in high school and loved it. Michener's take on NASA and the space program. He invents a state in the middle of the US. The usual rich characterization. Not as good as Centennial but still a worthwhile read.

A long investment of time but so worth it. One of Michener's masterpieces. Rich with American history, rich characterization, complex plotting. A fascinating story with fictional and true life characters interacting. A great read. Worth the investment in every way.
