This was a case of "it's not you, it's me." There was nothing particularly wrong with the writing or the story, it just wasn't my cup of tea. There was some incredible imagery, but I found it disturbing rather than entertaining. I don't think my stomach can handle survival stories. The beginning of t...
Some readers have compared this book to Salinger's "The Catcher in the Rye", presumably due to a common tendency to digress; yet where I found the former digressions distracting and annoying, the latter are awash with insightful, wry humor. There is no great mystery within, I spotted whodunnit after...
Audio Comments at the EndAs much as I love Lord John, I plowed through his series for this book. This is John and Jamie's book, as much as John and Jamie will ever have a book of their own, and it shows how their relationship begins to evolve into the loyal friendship they have throughout the later ...
Lord John and the Hand of Devils is a collection of three short stories featuring Lord John. I did enjoy how they each had a supernatural mystery to them that was less supernatural then it seemed. Lord John and the Hellfire Club is more of a slice of life story than a true mystery, it's quite short ...
While I was disappointed in the 1st book in Lord John's spin off (LJ and the Private Matter), I quite enjoyed this 2nd book. I don't know if it was Jamie's appearances, the focus on the death of LJ's father 17 years earlier, the Jacobite/Culloden references, the romance in LJ's life OR a little of a...
I finally got around to picking up Lord John's books while reading my way through A Breath of Snow and Ashes in the Outlander Series. Through the Outlander series I've grown to enjoy Lord John. He is extremely loyal, honorable and has done numerous things for the Frasers that I would deem above and ...
So I've gone through a slump of books that were just sort of ok so now I've bounced back to two back to back books I've rated with 5 stars. Lets discuss this book a little.First of all, I really only got this book or knew anything about it because I'd read [b:The Fault in Our Stars|11870085|The Faul...
When a zoo in Pondicherry, India, run by Pi Patel's father, has to close, Pi sets out with his family and many of the animals to travel to Canada by boat. En route, the boat sinks and Pi ends up sharing a lifeboat with a fully-grown Bengal tiger. He survives because he manages to train the tiger int...
Another interesting Diana Gabaldon story. While there's not really any way to compare this to Outlander (it's much shorter and there's no romance to speak of), it was still full of rich historical details. And I always fell smarter after having listened to a Gabaldon story. She uses the $20 words in...
It's been a while since I listened to the audio version of this book, and I've only thought about it again lately because I have seen trailers for the movie. For the most part, I can say that I enjoyed the story until the end. The end felt very much like having a religious message jammed at me.
