Jennifer Mathews (1969-) is a fourth-generation Californian and San Antonio transplant who teaches Anthropology and Archaeology at Trinity University. She has worked in the Yucatan Peninsula of southern Mexico since 1993, studying the ancient, historic and contemporary Maya. She has written three books, including "Lifeways in the Northern Maya Lowlands" (with Bethany Morrison), "Quintana Roo Archaeology" (with Justine Shaw), and most recently "Chicle - The Chewing Gum of the Americas: From the Ancient Maya to William Wrigley" (with Gillian P. Schultz). This most recent work emerged when she was surveying an ancient Maya road, and came across a historic railroad built on top of it, which had been used by the chicle (chewing gum) industry up until the 1970s. She spent years mapping the railroad, interviewing former chicleros (chicle extractors), and conducting archival research to produce this comprehensive volume on chicle. Recently she has been featured on National Public Radio (Weekend Edition Sunday with Liane Hansen), Moncrieff! (Newstalk on Irish independent talk radio), and ABC Radio/WJR Detroit with Warren Pierce.
