I was born and have always lived in Mexico City, where I was brought up bilingual and bicultural. My husband and I have two sons and, since the boys are on their own, we now share our home with Becca, a very mischevious golden retriever who loves socks and dishrags; and Lucas, a talkative yellow-nape parrot who is very partial to cheese and cookies. I write in both English and Spanish and have 30 books for kids published in Mexico and the US. Among them are "Uncle Monarch and the Day of the Dead" (Boyds Mills Press), "Los huesos sagrados", an Aztec myth about the creation of humans (Ediciones SM) and selected for the Mexican government's reading program; "Te cuento?" with four short stories about fantastic things that happen to normal kids (Editorial Norma); "El brebaje de Panfilo", about a Mexican magician and Felixm his pet tlacuache (opossum), (Editorial Porrua); and "Amol is geven/Erase una vez", with two Jewish folktales (Editorial Porrua). Others are five books in the Petate collection of Mexican folktales (Editorial Progreso):"Muyal" and "Sapo y Yuku", both in the Mexican government's reading program, as well as "El intercambio", "¡Qué delicia!", and "Baak". "Vamos a comer...¡flores!" and "Vamos a comer...¡bichos!", about edible flowers and insects from Mexico (Ediciones SM) and both in the government reading program. Recent publications are "De astutos, tragones y mordelones", with three folktales (Editorial Norma), "Cuentos antiguos para niños modernos" (Editorial Norma), "Un grito en la oscuridad y otros cuentos del México colonial" (Yo sí leo Editores), and "Los huesos sagrados y El nuevo sol-dos cuentos aztecas" (Ediciones SM). To be released in the fall of 2013 is "Whiskers, Tails and Wings-Folktales from Mexico" (Charlesbridge). As you can tell, Mexico and its people and traditions provide me with a neverending, fascinating supply of subjects and themes.
