Karen Marie Christa Minns was born on May 25,1956, in Gardner, Massachusetts, the eldest of five children. Minns attended Wells College, in Aurora New York, which became the fictional setting for her first novel, VIRAGO and later, for her third novel, BLOODSONG. Her second novel, CALLING RAIN, was greatly influenced by Minns' involvement in the study of and activism for Native Americans, while in upstate New York.Minns moved to Los Angeles, California, after college, and began her public writing life as a poet and fiction writer. An outspoken feminist and children's rights advocate, Minns used her experiences working as a counselor with street hustlers, in Hollywood, as a secondary plot theme in BLOODSONG.Though mainly known as a horror writer (with a specialty in vampires), during this time, Minns also wrote extensively about issues in the LGBT community, including articles and essays on erotica, politics, education and foster children. She continues to publish poetry, essays and fiction. Her most recent work has been anthologized in the collection LOVE, WEST HOLLYWOOD,from Alyson Press.
